What is a hardware wallet?

A Ledger hardware wallet is a physical device designed to safeguard the private keys associated with your crypto accounts. Those keys authorize transactions and provide access to digital assets on supported networks.

Rather than keeping private keys on an internet-connected device, a hardware wallet is designed to keep them protected within the device’s secure environment. You can review and approve transactions directly on the device—keeping important security decisions in your hands.

↳

Support varies by model, network, and software. Check supported assets before transferring funds.

Your setup, step by step.

Keep your device nearby and move at your own pace. Your model’s on-screen prompts are the source of truth.

01
Verify your destination

Start at the official site

Type ledger.com/start into your browser yourself. Check the address bar carefully, and avoid sponsored links, pop-ups, or setup links sent by strangers.

02
Your device, your PIN

Connect and initialize

Follow the instructions for your exact Ledger model. Choose to set up a new device, or use the official recovery instructions if restoring an existing wallet. Create your PIN directly on the device.

03
Official software only

Install Ledger Wallet

Get Ledger Wallet (formerly Ledger Live) only through Ledger’s official website or a verified app store listing. Use it to manage supported accounts, install device apps, and prepare transactions.

04
Never share it

Write down your recovery phrase

Record every word exactly as your device instructs and store it offline in a private, physically secure place. Never photograph it, type it into an app, or share it with anyone—including support.

05
Check compatibility

Install the right blockchain app

In Ledger Wallet, install the relevant blockchain app on your device. What is available depends on the model, firmware, and software version. Confirm the network before creating an account.

06
Verify on-device

Receive and verify

Generate a receiving address for a supported account. Whenever device verification is available, compare the address shown in the app with the one shown on your Ledger screen. Check the asset and network, then consider a small test transfer.
